I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and when the doctor examined me she said the baby could come any day now.
Since our baby is due in 10 days,* I shouldn't have been surprised. But I was shocked.
I had just assumed that our baby would be late for two reasons:
• First babies are usually late.
• Peter and I were 10 days late and two days late respectively. (We were also both enormous at almost nine pounds each, but that's another story.)
I realize that those aren't particularly good reasons to assume that our baby would be late, but irrationally I was preparing to give birth at the end of September or beginning of October.
So last night emotional Carolynne and calm and rational Peter had this discussion:
Carolynne: I'm worried our baby is going to be born this week! We're not ready!
Peter: How are we not ready?
Carolynne: Our vacuum isn't here yet! How am I supposed to nest if I don't have a vacuum?
Peter: Ummmm . . .
Peter is right, by the way. Aside from the vacuum — which really doesn't have anything to do with giving birth — we are completely ready. I just can't believe our lives are going to change so much and so quickly. I'm excited but I'm also a little nervous.
* And yes, my due date has been revised again back to Sept. 22.
